Top things to see in Reykjavik

Reykjavik is not just a city where locals live. It is a place that offers Icelandic culture, art, and activities. There are great must see attractions in Reykjavik that you shouldn’t miss. For instance, you can walk along the famous Rainbow street. Taste the famous Icelandic hotdog, visit Hallgrímskirkja church. See the Sun Voyager sculpture and more.

I recommend you visit Baejarins Beztu Pylsur (the best hot dogs in town). This little vendor is on the corner of Tryggvagata 1. Many tourists, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton, have stopped here for a bite of Iceland’s national food. The hot dog is made with a mix of lamb, pork, and beef. It’s worth a bite and actually tastes good.

Walk along the Rainbow Street

After grabbing a bite at the famous Icelandic hot dog stand, take a walk over to Rainbow Street. A vibrant road painted in rainbow colors to celebrate Pride. The street has many shops and cafes, great to wander and get some souvenirs.

Visit Hallgrímskirkja Church

At the top of the street stands Hallgrímskirkja, the tallest church in Iceland. Entry is free, but to visit the tower you’ll need to buy a ticket. I highly recommend it, the panoramic views of Reykjavík are absolutely stunning. Plus you get to see the bells in the tower.

After a visit at Hallgrímskirkja Church, walk along the seafront to see the Sun Voyager sculpture. It is one of the most visited sights with breathtaking sea views.

There are many museums and galleries around the city you can visit. Read my recent blog on free things to do in Reykjavik about my visit to Reykjavik Art Museum Kjarvalsstaðir.

Harpa Concert Hall

This stunning landmark known for its unique glass facade inspired by Iceland’s landscapes. Located by the waterfront, it hosts concerts, events, and exhibitions, making it a must-visit for music lovers and architecture enthusiasts. It’s defiantly worth a visit, the views are stunning and the glass work is a masterpiece.

I can easily spend hours in this building, it’s so mesmerizing and has a laid back atmosphere. There aren’t many seats around just a few benches on some floors. There is a restaurant but I think you need to reserve a table to dine there.

Book your tickets for activities in advance

There are more must-see attractions, you can go wale watching. This activity can be booked in advance and takes place from Reykjavik harbor. You can visit Sky Lagoon a 15 minute drive from Reykjavik. I wrote a guide to the Sky Lagoon blog post. See the Lava show which is the only live show in Iceland. Eat like a local and do a food walking tour with tastings or a hop on hop off bus tour. There are so many Iceland day tours you can do.
