Hastings is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy a mix of history, and coastal charm. With its stunning coastline, you can relax on the beach or take in breathtaking views from Hastings Castle. Hastings is steeped in history, especially with its connection to the famous Battle of Hastings. It offers plenty of fascinating sites to explore.

I recommend you explore the old town It’s the best past of Hastings. I loved exploring the narrow streets and historic gems. There are quirky shops to browse, cosy pubs to sit in, and a castle worth a climb.

How to get to Hastings from London by train

You can get a train from London train stations like St. Pancras International, Charing Cross and Victoria. The fastest route out of the three, is London Charing Cross. A direct train is 1 hour and 32 minutes.

Explore the Historic Hastings Castle

Hastings Castle sits high on a cliff looking over the beautiful Hastings Old Town. The castle was built by William the Conqueror after his famous victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Today, it’s a peaceful place to visit, full of history and stunning views.

To reach Hastings Castle, you need to take a walk up the steep West Hill Cliff. This path offers spectacular views along the way. When you reach the entrance, you will find that the majority of the castle is in ruins. Nonetheless, there are information boards for context.

The castle is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, tickets cost £6.90 and can be purchased on the day of entry. It is a cashless site so pay by card only. Other than that, the place isn’t big you can walk around in less than 20 minutes. There is a section where you can sit and watch a video that explains the invasion by William the Conqueror.

There are no facilities on-site. The nearest public toilets are near West Hill Cafe, which you pass on your way up. Though the castle is in ruins, it’s still a fascinating site to visit and learn about the history. It owes its allure to its rich history and stunning views.

These tall, black wooden sheds that stand in neat rows along the shingle beach were Built in the 1800s. They were used to store fishing gear made from natural materials like cotton and hemp. These materials would rot if left out in the open so were kept inside the sheds.

An old church, filled with stories of the town’s fishing past. You can even step aboard a real 1912 fishing boat called the ‘Enterprise’. There are nets, old photos, and other treasures to explore and it’s all free to visit.

While we’re on the topic of museums, visit Hastings contemporary. There are a dozen exhibitions held here. You’ll find the world’s leading contemporary artists art on show.

Take a ride on the Cliff Railway / East Hill Lift

The East Hill Lift is a fun and easy way to enjoy some of the best views in Hastings. It’s the oldest funicular railway in the country, gently taking you up to the top of East Hill. From there, you’ll get stunning views over the Old Town and coastline. There’s not many benches to sit on but you can bring a blanket or picnic to enjoy.

Wander around Hastings old town

Hastings Old Town is full of charm, with narrow streets, quirky shops, and pubs tucked between historic buildings. It’s the perfect place to wander, explore local treasures, and soak up the town’s seaside character. You’ll find everything from fresh fish stalls to antiques and art stores.

Hastings Beach is a great spot to relax, with its wide shingle shore and fresh sea air. Just steps away is the pier. There are arcades, rides to go on, little stalls for snacks and souvenirs or just sit and eat.

Eat fish and chips at Maggie’s

If you fancy fish and chips, the best place to get it from is Maggie’s. It is said to be the best fish and chip shop in Hastings. Located on Rock-a-Nore Raod Maggie’s serves local fresh fish, it’s very delicious must i add. Just be aware the shop gets very busy so expect long queues.

Why Hastings Makes the Perfect Day Trip

Hastings makes a great day trip for everyone. It offers a mix of seaside charm, history, and great views. Its lively beach and historic pier are great spots. Plus, the quirky Old Town and scenic cliff railway offer lots to explore. It’s family friendly with play areas to keep the little ones happy. There is a golf miniature, playland with lots of rides, and an aquarium. When it comes to food, Hastings old town has plenty options to choose from.
