A guide to Sky Lagoon, Iceland

What is Sky Lagoon?

Sky Lagoon is geothermal pool. It opened in 2021, and is the most luxuries new hot spring near Reykjavik. It’s famous for it’s 7-step spa ritual that ranges from hot to cold plunges, body scrubs and saunas. The geothermal swimming pool keep a temperature of 38-40 degrees Celsius. It offers guests a choice between two packages; the Ser and Saman pass.

Spa packages at Sky Lagoon

The standard package, known as the ‘Saman’ pass, features a 7-step spa ritual. It is priced at £89.93 and includes access to open changing facilities. If you’re uncomfortable changing in a shared changing room, I recommend choosing the ‘Ser’ pass. It also includes the 7-step spa ritual, with the added benefit of a private changing room. The ‘Ser’ pass costs £106, which is only £20 more than the ‘Saman’ pass.

Sky Lagoon is just a 10-minute drive from Reykjavik city. You don’t have to travel far, unlike when visiting Blue Lagoon, which is a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik.

The experience at Sky Lagoon

I had a wonderful experience at Sky Lagoon. The check-in process was swift and simple, thanks to the helpful staff. I opted for the ‘SER’ pass, which granted me access to the private changing rooms.

The changing rooms are well-maintained, equipped with towels, hairdryers, shampoo, conditioner, and bags for wet swimsuits. Lockers are available for securing your belongings, which can be locked using the wrist band provided at reception upon check-in. These wrist bands also allow you to buy drinks once outside the Lagoon.

What to expect with the Spa 7 step ritual

I recommend you do all 7 steps of the ritual. Everything is well marked so you follow the steps in order of the experience. It starts with entering the Lagoon. Then, if you dare, take a dip in the cold plunge. Follow this with a sauna session, cold mist, and a body scrub. Next, enjoy the steam followed by an Icelandic smoothie drink.

Once you’ve completed the 7 step spa ritual, you can return to the Lagoon. You can stay there for as long as you like. You can order drinks with your wrist band which is connected with your bank card. This will be done all at check in point before you start your spa experience.

The drinks are pricey as you’d expect. I think I paid €18 ($20) for my cocktails!!! However, there are cheaper options if you go for a beer or soft drink. But, as you probably know by now, Iceland is expensive so expect high prices.

All areas of the spa are well maintained and clean. You’ll find members of staff at entry points to guide you if you need help. My entire experience at Sky Lagoon was the absolute best! I’ve never experienced anything like that. I consider the ‘Ser’ ticket to be reasonably priced. It’s more affordable than a spa day in England, where I’ve spent £120 for just an hour’s massage. A spa day at Sky Lagoon is definitely something I will do when I go back to Iceland.

How to book tickets for Sky Lagoon

Did you even go to Iceland if you didn’t visit the Lagoons? Sky Lagoon and Blue Lagoon are the most popular Lagoons in Iceland. You can’t leave Iceland without doing either one or if you prefer others since Iceland has hundreds. After endlessly driving around the ring road, take some time off to unwind in these geothermal pools. They are worth the money.

I booked the ‘SER’ pass for £92 on GetYourGuide – an activity provider that offers tickets at discounted rates. Viator also offers great deals on tickets for Sky Lagoon, you can buy tickets HERE.

The nearest hotel to the Sky Lagoon is Grand Hotel. It’s the tallest building in Reykjavik and just 10 minutes drive to Sky Lagoon. The rooms are nice and clean and affordable, have a look on Booking.com. Whether you stay there or not, you can still reach Sky Lagoon in 10 -15 minutes by car from Reykjavik.
